How To Prevent Avocados From Browning

Now,  I talk  about Avocado and how much I use it repeatedly in my blog so it would be somewhat discourteous of me not to share with you some tips on how to keep it from turning brown, as it does, or how to store your guacamole and keep it looking fresh.

So what’s making it go brown?

Various fruits and vegetables such as apples and potatoes contain phenolic compounds and enzymes that, when exposed to oxygen, will produce a brown-black pigment..
Since oxygen seems to be the culprit, it makes sense that preventing oxygen exposure would prevent the browning. Here are some “home remedies” you can try out.

Lemon or Lime Juice
Citric acid in lemon and lime juice is a strong antioxidant that will slow the browning process. Simply squeezing a small amount of fresh citrus juice over your avocado or guacamole to keep it from browning for at least a day. Many guacamole recipes include a small amount of lime juice, which will also help.

Oil
Oil is an excellent barrier to oxygen. Brushing a thin layer of olive oil on to the surface of a cut avocado will prevent browning. This is great when it comes to the whole fruit, but unfortunately not so much for guacamole since the surface is difficult to brush.

Plastic Wrap
I am not the biggest fan of this method since I rarely use plastic wrap, but it  is most commonly used in food preparation and storage to prevent oxygen exposure.
To protect an avocado that has been cut open, simply wrap the avocado as tightly as possible, leaving no air gaps. For guacamole, press the plastic wrap onto the surface of the dip instead of stretched out over the top of the bowl.

Red Onion
If you have extra red onion, it can be used to keep your avocado or guacamole from browning. Simply cut the onion into large chunks and place it in the same container or sprinkled over your guacamole during storage.
