Recently there has been a lot of discussion about parabens and sulphates, particularly in the beauty and body care industry, and how they may be affecting our health. Why are consumers opting for Paraben free, Sulphate free products?

What are Parabens?
Parabens are a group of chemicals that are used in many products that people use on a daily basis. Parabens are used in products because they are an inexpensive ingredient and are effective in preventing the growth of fungi and bacteria. Lately, people have become increasingly aware of and sensitive about the potential health dangers that parabens can cause. This has motivated many people to search for all-natural or organic products that are free of parabens. It has become increasingly easier to find such products since the health, beauty, and pharmaceutical industries have begun to understand that people desire more natural or organic products.

Which products that we use on a daily basis contain Parabens?
Parabens are found in a large range of products, most commonly in the health beauty products, like in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and skin products including facial creams, body moisturizers and lotions. They are also found in other items used for personal hygiene such as deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo and shaving gels.

Why are Parabens so bad and what skin problems can they possibly cause?
It has been suggested that Parabens are potentially bad for a number of reasons, mainly because they can cause irritation of the skin. This is particularly true for adults, children or babies with sensitive skin. Common skin problems associated with parabens include dermatitis, rosacea and other allergic reactions.

What are Sulphates?
Sulphates (or sulfates) are ingredients normally found in shampoos, soaps and most foaming products that cut grease and they are the reason that our soaps and shampoos have lather, which is caused by a foaming agent. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is also in dish soap detergent, air disinfectant spray, most laundry detergents, and even in household cleaning chlorine (bleach). Yes, that’s right. The same thing we are putting on our head!
